2023 Top 10 Sports Highlights
The 2023 sports calendar is filled with major events you can’t miss. The World Baseball Classic, FINA World Championships, and IAAF World Championships are just a few.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup (Men) is also on the schedule in 2023. If you’re a fan of basketball, make sure to mark these on your calendar!
The World Baseball Classic is a premier international baseball tournament that pits the top players from around the globe against each other.
The tournament was first held in 2006 and is now hosted by Canada, Japan, Puerto Rico, and the United States.
The Dominican Republic went undefeated in the tournament to win the title. It was the first time a team had gone through a WBC without losing a single game.
The FINA World Championships are held every two years and feature swimming, diving, high diving, open-water swimming, artistic swimming, and water polo.
The FINA World Championships are scheduled in Fukuoka, Japan, from July 14–30, 2023. This will be the second time Fukuoka has hosted the World Championships, 22 years after it staged the 2001 edition.
The IAAF World Championships is the most prominent sports event of the year. It is held every two years and is the world’s largest track and field championship.
Athletes from around the world contest the championships. The 2023 edition will take place in Budapest, Hungary, from 19–27 August.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup (Men) is a quadrennially international men’s basketball tournament. Originally known as the FIBA World Championship, it was renamed after the 2014 edition.
The competition is contested by the best national teams in the world, including those from Europe, North America, and South America. The winner is crowned world champion and receives the Naismith Trophy. The event also allocates quota berths for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The Summer Universiade, one of the world’s leading multi-sport events for university athletes, is back after a two-year hiatus. The event will be held in Kazan, Russia, from July 6–17 this year.
The competition will feature curling, ice hockey, biathlon, short-track speed skating, Alpine skiing, ski jumping, snowboarding, and Nordic combined. Panasonic is an official partner of the Kazan Summer Universiade and will provide a range of cutting-edge video display devices and video conferencing equipment for the Games.
Top swimming athletes return to Fukuoka in July for the 2023 World Aquatics Championships. This is the first major long course meet since Tokyo was postponed due to COVID-19, and this should be a fully-loaded competition.
The meet is set to feature many of the same big names that skipped the 2022 edition in Budapest, with the likes of Emma McKeon and Ariarne Titmus back in action. There’s also plenty of exciting competition to look forward to in the women’s events.
The Invictus Games is a sports competition for wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans. Founded by Prince Harry in 2014, they use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation, and generate a wider understanding of those who serve their country.
The sixth edition of the Invictus Games will take place in Dusseldorf, Germany, from September 9–16, 2023. It will include 500 athletes from around 20 nations.
The Summer Universiade is the world’s largest and most prestigious multi-sport event centered around student-athletes. It is staged every two years in a different city.
The 30th edition of the Games, which took place in Naples, Italy, from July 3 to 14, 2019, was one of the most successful in history, with a record-breaking 6,000 athletes competing across 18 sports.
The World Artistic Gymnastics Championships will bring together the best gymnasts worldwide to compete on the iconic Sportpaleis in Antwerp. The competition will also play a crucial role in determining Olympic quotas for 2024.
